Understanding Letterform
The image above might looks like symmetry, however it's actually not symmetrical. however it is easy to see the two different stroke weights of
the stroke form.

Letters:

By comparing the lowercase "a" of two seemingly identical sans-serif typefaces, Helvetica and Univers, We can see how easy it is to observe how complicated each individual letterform is. There is a noticeable difference in character between the letterforms when you compare how the stems finish and how the bowls meet the stems.

Maintaining X-Height
The size of lowercase letters is usually referred to as the x-height. Curved strokes, such as those in "s," must, however, extend either below the baseline or slightly above the median in order to seem the same size as adjacent vertical and horizontal strokes.

Contrast

The basic principles of Graphic Design apply directly to typography. The following are some examples of contrast-the most powerful dynamic in design—as applied to type, based on a format devised by Rudi Ruegg.

The simple contrasts produces numerous variations: small+organic/large+machined; small+dark/ large light.

Task 2:

For task 2, we had to create a two-page editorial spread (200x200mm). I chose the text with the headline "A code to build on and live by". We designed the headline in Adobe Illustrator and formatted the layout in Adobe InDesign.

1. Research and Sketches:

When i first know that there's a word "Code" in my headline the first thing that i looked up for in the coding icon. So i saved the image below for my first sketch and continue to look for another reference that i can find.

For the second idea  i wanted use the number 0 that is usually found on digital clock, I'm planning to use the "0" to replace the "O". This is because the 0 in digital clocks are usually related to coding.

For my third sketches, I'm planning to put the word "Build" inside a blueprint, So i quickly searched for blueprint on the internet.

Lastly i wanted to create a design that's very simple, i design that i have in mind is just simply putting some random line of code inside the "O".

And after thinking of the ideas i came up with 4 designs, i think these designs are great. Because they're very minimalist, and it's not hard to read from a distance.

Next up is making the layout design in adobe InDesign, for this part we are recommended to make a sketch first before making the layout. Mr. Max told me that i can use the final sketches for my headline, and so below are my sketches.

First Sketch

Second sketch

Third Sketch

Fourth Sketch

After some thinking, i decided to go with the first or fourth sketches, the reason why i didn't pick the second and the third is because it will make the reader confused with the text order. Next up is putting them in Adobe InDesign.

First Design

Second Design

After looking giving some thought, i decided that the first design is a better one, because there is less text on the first design compared to the second one

Blocking

After the self directed learning week, i asked Mr. Max about my final designs apparently he likes the Unused Sketch 3 that i drafted. So he asked me to create my final version using this layout/design.

Unused Sketch 3

Body Text:

Typeface: Adobe Caslon Pro
Font/s: Regular
Font Size: 8
Leading: 11pt
Character Per-line: 70-80 (Except for paragraph 3)
Alignment: Left Justified

Page Format:
Margins: 10mm Top+Bottom+Left+Right
Columms: 2
Glutter: 5mm

Draft/Unused Designs/More Sketches/More Designs:

During this task i also came up with another designs, however i didn't use it because i thought that i doesn't look nice enough. However i decided to post it in this E-Porto so i can explain it better why i didn't use it.

More Sketches:

The image above is another sketch for the other design, i didn't use both design because it has a weird layout and i don't think that it is appealing enough for the reader.

Unused Sketch 3

Sketch 4

Sketch 5

Both Sketch 3 & 4 and 5 are actually a good design, however the headline is not my favorite compared to the other design, So i decided to put all of the designs to draft.

More Designs (Not Approved) :
Below are the layouting that i've done for all the sketches above (On the unused/draft)

Feedback:

Week 7: Mr Max approved 2 out of 4 of my headline sketches, i consulted Mr. Max by sending him a WhatsApp message.

Week 8: Self Directed Learning Week

Week 9: Mr. Max said that i should go with the Unused Sketch 3. He said that he liked the fact that the design is the simplest, compared to other design. I Did what he asked and he put some final touch for my layout design. He also told me to do the layout(ing) in adobe InDesign so Not just the sketches.

Self Reflection:

Compared to the Task 1, This task is more time consuming. however i enjoyed it, it was fun discovering new layout and doing multiple trial and error.

Reading:

For this task i decided to read this book, mostly because this book talks a lot about gridlines, and mostly teaches us on gridlines. such as five- column layout or six column layout.

This book also mentions about how we compose, the great thing about this book is that there's so many example image. So this book is very easy to understand
