Design Principles/Task 2
Week 3-5
Instruction:
In this task we are required to write 300-500 word of visual analysis of the artwork that we selected during task 1, after that we are required to create 3 sketches on how the design could be improved. and we have to also describe each idea and write a rationale of our sketches.
Visual Analysis:
1. Observation:
From the painting we can also see that there is some contrast, we can see
this in the tall black building which makes a separation from the blue
skies. Another thing is that the color of the moon (yellow) makes a nice separation between the skies and the moon
For the first sketches, I'm trying to modernize the original painting by replacing the village with a cities, i thought this was a good idea since a lot of buildings shape are now different from 100 years ago.
Sketch 2:
Sketch 3:
The painting is created in horizontal format, and at first glance we can see
some black building on the left side of the painting, and we can also see
some wind swirl in the middle of the painting, and on the bottom right of
the painting, we can see some village. also from the painting we can see
that the painting has some thick brushstrokes that creates a very visible
texture. And for the color palettes, this painting has some vibrant color
such as blue and yellow.
2. Analysis:
1. Movement
From the painting we can see some Movement, We can this on
the sky where there are swirling patterns that create motion this also helps
with drawing the viewer's attention.
2. Contrast
3. Unity
Last is Unity, we can see this in the consistent color and
texture that Vincent uses for this painting. We can see this from the use of colour of the village or the small building which blends nicely with the skies and the mountain behind the village.
Interpertation:
A lot of people assume that this painting reflects Van Gogh's mental state at the time, and the swirling skies represent troubled mind. a lot of people agree with this assumption because this painting was created when Van Gogh was in asylum.
Also this painting is often related to connection to nature, because of the rolling hills, vibrant skies night of the painting. which Van Gogh found comforting. Lastly some people thinks that this painting is a symbol of graveyard, mourning and death.
Next up we are asked to do some sketches based from our selected artwork, we are required to create 3 sketches. for the sketches I decided to change up the original artwork and see it from a different perspective by making it in portrait orientation.

Sketch 1 |
For the first sketches, I'm trying to modernize the original painting by replacing the village with a cities, i thought this was a good idea since a lot of buildings shape are now different from 100 years ago.
Sketch 2:

| Sketch 2 |
For the second sketch, since the original panting symbolizes Van Gogh
connection to nature, I decided to create a mountain with a starry night
sky. i decided to remove the moon from the sketeches and focuses on the
swirly skies from the original painting
|
| Sketch 3 |
For the last sketches, since the Stary Night painting is about a symbol
of graveyards, mourning, and death, I decided to create this sketch, where
it looks like someone's visiting his partner who passed away.
Feedback:
Week 4: No Feedback because still WIP
Week 5: Dr. Charles said that my works are good and ask me what sketches that I wanted to make, and I told him that I would go with sketch 3 and he agreed. he also said that I need to add more details.
