Design Principles/Task 3

Week 5-7

Instructions:

Task 3:

For this last task we are required to choose 1 out of the 3 sketches that we made during task 2 and then develop it into an actual artwork.

Chosen sketches

For this task I decided to develop it using adobe illustrator and here is reference that I used for my artwork:

I also the ending scene of the anime Frieren, which is currently my favorite anime:

And Lasly the Starry night painting for the swirling skies:

Progress:
I started by making the background for my artwork first, for this part I decided to use gradient #020A30 and #153E75 which is dark blue.

initially I wanted to use blue to purple-ish colour, however I quickly discovered that blue background works better for this artwork I also added some star textures later on.

Next up, I decided to make the ground and I also decided to use a simple grass texture for this part.

Next is the skies part, for this part I decided to use the pencil tool and the pen tool, and for the skies I decided to use 3 different colours for the swirl part.

And Here's the final artwork:

After the final consultation with Dr. Charles, he told me that I should make it more simple by removing certain things, first he told me to remove everything like the tress, graveyard, the character and the swirling skies, and then told me to replace the character with a cat to make it more different from my initial inspiration.

and after a little bit of work this is the artwork that I came up with, I decided to do what Dr.Charles told me and then add a little bit of shadow. this artwork is much simple compared to the previous one, however I do prefer this work.

Title: Moonlit Gathering
Year: 2025
Artist: Eric Chang
Size: A4

The reason why i decided on this artwork is because i think that this artwork represent something that many of us take for granted these days and that is gathering, whether that is gathering with a family or even with a friend. We tend to take these things for granted by playing with our phone constantly when we're going out with them that we forget that they don't live forever.

This is why I hope that by creating this artwork I could remind people to spend time with their friends or family more, and we also need to remember that no matter how lost we are. our family is always there to welcome us home.

Also based from my artwork inspiration (Starry night by van Gogh and the frieren scene) this is what they mentioned, van Gogh painting is a symbol about death and the anime frieren is about regrets of not spending time with our loved ones (Which is why I love the starry night painting and the anime).

Design Principles that Are applied:

Contrast:

We can see this on the yellow moon that creates a separation between the background which also creates a strong attention point. also we can see that the color of the cat (black) strongly contrast against the night skies which makes them stand out.

Unity:

We can see this from the cat's that is close to each other and we can also see this on the color that is used throughout the artwork, which is cool tones and a little bit of warm yellow. also we can see this in the skies where the cloud is close to each other

Repetition:

Also from this artwork we can see some repetition, we can see this on the cats that have a similar curve and color. also we can see some repetition in the skies (Clouds and the stars)

Feedback:

Week 7: Dr. Charles told me to remove the unnecessary part from my artwork such as the tress, the swirling skies and the graveyard, he also told me to replace my character with a cat to make it look different from my inspiration artwork.
