Week 1: Culture and Design
Today, we live in a visual information culture, where visuals are a powerful
persuasive medium to provide most of our information about the world.
Data shows that 40% of people respond more to visuals than text, 90% of
information transmitted to the brain is visual and visuals are processed
60,000x faster in the brain than text.
Visuals are:
- Everything that can be seen (This definition is wide and all inclusive, including nature)
- & Everything produced or created by humans that can be seen (for the purpose of visual representation)
Examples:
Designers Also need to be aware of these things to create a designs that are
inclusive and resonate with diverse audience
- Cultural Nuances
- Symbolism
- Context
Design Significance:
We are able to identify the social cultural & political sphere where the
design elements reside by understanding the design significance of the
graphics in its cultural studies, philosophy sociology and origin history.

Cultural sensitivity goes beyond aesthetics, it also include functionality,
usability and the overall user experience.
Design Sensitivity:
Cultural Sensitivity awareness:
Symbolism and imagery:
Certain symbols and images may carry different meanings in different
cultures, and as a designers we should be mindful of potential cultural
interpretations to avoid misunderstandings.
Typography and Language: Picking a fonts and text styles are
culturally appropriate and is important, considering language variations and
ensuring accurate translations is also crucial for reaching diverse
audiences.
Color Considerations: Colors can also have cultural significance and
their meaning may vary across different societies. by understanding the
cultural associations of colours, could help a designers to pick appropriate
colors.
Addressing Cultural Sensitivity:
Inclusive Design: Designers should
strive to create a products and experiences that are accessible and
inclusive for people from various cultural backgrounds, including those with
different abilities and needs.
Localization: Designers
should adapt designs that have specific cultural context through
localisation, this can enhance the relevance and acceptance of a product or
service.
User Research: Conducting
through user research including ethnographic studies and user testing across
diverse grounps helps designers gain insights into cultural preferences and
behaviour.
Cultural awareness training: Design teams could benefit from cultural awareness training to develop a
deeper understanding of diverse perspectives and sensitivities.

Reflections:
Experience:
During the 7 weeks that i learned intercultural design, i learned a lot
about teamwork. At first i was having a hard time to connect with my
teammates, thankfully i managed to bond with them quite quickly. I think
the part that my team struggle the most is finding the right time to do
our discussion.
Observation:
For the assignment that we are given we have decided to do a research on
stained glass. I think that integrating stained glass to everyday products
is quite challenging.
Findings:
Although integrating stained glass to everyday design is challenging. My
team managed to do it nicely, the most important thing is to never give up
