Recap of Requirements for Task 3:

Create a font that is intended to solve a larger problem or meant
to be part of a solution in the area of your interest be it graphic
design, animation, new media or entertainment design or any
other related area not necessarily reflecting your specialisation.
End result: a complete generated font (.ttf) with applications.

or

Explore the use of an existing letterform in an area of interest,
understand its existing relationship, identify areas that could be
improved upon, explore possible solutions or combinations that
may add value to the existing letterform / lettering. End result: a
complete generated font (.ttf) with applications.

or

Experiment. For your idea to qualify as an experiment it must be
novel and unique — working with material that might be 3-
dimensional, digitally augmented, edible, unusual, typographic
music video or fine art. End result: defined by student.

For this task, we are asked to come up with a proposal of what we wanted to do for this task, below are my proposal.
For this task, I decided to go with the first proposal, which is expanding an existing letterfont.

Progress:

Fig 1.1 First Attempt (Week 9, 23/06/25)

Fig 1.1.1 First Attempt Final outcome (Week 9, 23/06/25)

For my first attempt, I modified an existing font and then simply adding a pattern that the Bacha font have, however, Mr. Vinod quicly reminded me that When creating or expanding some letter font we cannot use an existing font. And we have to make the font ourselves.

After getting the first feedback, I immediately started to create another font since time was critical in this task 3, And I decided to create something that's inspired by a square font. I decided to do this because by using a square-styled font I can make the font thicker, thus the pattern that I applied could be more visible.

Fig 1.2 Font inspiration (Week 10, 24/06/25)

After searching for the font style, It's time to begin creating the font. Mr, Vinod suggested that I begin by creating the letter H,O,A. This is because all the letter are based on those 3 letter. Below are the ouline only and the progress of the creation of the font

Fig 1.2.2 Font Outline 2 (Week 10, 24/06/25)

Fig 1.3 Font Progress 1 (Week 10, 24/06/25)

And after doing a few letters, I liked the way the font looks. So I decided to continue with this design. I also refined the shape of the font so its easy to differenciate.

Fig 1.4 Creating the rest of the letter (Week 10, 23/06/25)

After I've done with all the letters, I decided to add Object(Smooth) effect to the letter, this way the letter won't look too sharp and have a rounded corner. After that I applied the pattern from the Bacha letters. Also I began to create the lower caps letter.

Fig 1.5 Adding the pattern to the letter (Week 11, 30/06/25)

Fig 1.6 Creating the lower caps letter (Week 11, 30/06/25)

After i've done the uppercase and the lowercase, below are the final outcome for the uppercase and lowercase.

Fig 1.6.1 Final Outcome for the letter (Week 11, 30/06/25)

After I've done with the lowercaps, next I created the numerals. For the numerals, the progress was quick, and I managed to finish it in class. Also for the number 1 2 and 3, 6 and 7 i've used the shapebuilder hence why there are no dots on those numbers

Fig 1.7 Creating the numerals (Week 11, 01/07/25)

Lastly, We are also asked to create the symbol, On minimum we need to create the symbol that is on our keyboard. For the symbols, i tried my best to apply the pattern without ruining the overall look of the typefaces.

Fig 1.7.1 Creating the symbols (Week 11, 01/07/25)

After, I created all the Capital letter, Low capital letter and the symbols, now I need to import it to fontlab and do some kerning. For the kerning, we need to follow the instruction provided by Mr. Vinod.

Below are the final outcome for the numerals and the symbols.

Fig 1.7.2 Final outcome for numerals and symbols (Week 11, 01/07/25)

Fig 1.7.3 Outline for symbol and numerals (Week 11, 01/07/25)

Fontlab:

Fig 1.8 Importing the letter (Week 11, 07/07/25)

Kerning the caps letter, we have to begin with H & O. And after that, we can use the measurements to determine the kerning for other letters. And for the lower caps, we need to use "n&o" to determine the kerning for other letters.

Font Application & Presentation:

For the application, I decided to create 4 for the honor competition award, and 2 for the normal application. I created 2 variant for the signature one, so i can use it later for the animation.

Fig 1.9 Application Progress 1 (Week 12, 14/07/25)

Next, I created the background for the application, for this part i wanted to make sure that all of the font is visible, I also decided to give all of the number some gradient effect to make it look nicer

Fig 2.0 Application Progress 2 (Week 12, 14/07/25)

After i've created the background for the application, I created the time part, this one is pretty straightforward.

Fig 2.1 Application Progress 3 (Week 12, 14/07/25)

For the animation part, I came decided to make an animation transitioning from white theme to dark theme, this is because on standby the phone with likely transition from active to always on display, making it suitable. for the animation i used after effects.

Fig 2.2 Animation Progress (Week 12, 14/07/25)

Font Presentation

After i've done the font application, it's time to create the font presentation. for this part we are required to create 5 presentation, for this presentation i looked up for a retro color palette. and decided to use the 2 colors below for my background.

Fig 2.3 Color Palette (Week 12, 14/07/25)

and for the font colour i decided to use a brighter color,

Fig 2.4 Color Palette 2 (Week 12,14/07/2025)

I begin by presenting my uppercase and lowercase letter and numbers, since it is the easiest one

Fig 2.5 Font Presentation Progress 1 (Week 12,14/07/2025)

After that i created the symbol and the name of the font family, for the font family i gave it some 3D effect to make it look nicer. also i gave it some description of the font and my name and year of creation on the top and bottom.

Fig 2.6 Font Presentation Progress 2 (Week 12,14/07/2025)

Lastly, since this font was inspired by the pattern found on apple old computers, i decided to make one presentation based from that.

Fig 2.7 Font Presentation Progress 3 (Week 12,14/07/2025)

I tried another variation with a brighter colour palette, however upon looking it i think that the colour palette doesn't feel nice to look at, and so i decided to stick with the previour design.

Reflections:

Experience:

Week 9 to 12 feels like 1 week and, there were a lot to do, from designing the typeface until the presentation and application. Although it was kinda hard, I found this task to be the most interesting and fun task.

Observation:
During class, I learned that the important thing when designing a font is that we need to make sure that it is easy to read, meaning that we shouldn't design a font that is too complicated and it's hard to read from afar.

Findings:
Consistency is important, even in typography. When designing something i tend to forget to make sure that it is consistent, I am greatful to have a lecturer that i very focused on small little details. Thanks to this task, I am able to develop the awareness in consistency and i hope to apply it in other subjects.

Fig 3.1 The Five Process of creating typographic design

The 5 Steps When creating Typographic Design

1. Defining

Defining the problem and its parameters is the first step in the design process. Identify the client’s needs, activity sphere, potential solution goals, audience, budget, and production limitations.

2. Gathering

This phase provides essential information for designers about all aspects of the problem, including client information, problem content, and production requirements. Designers should utilize all available resources, such as experts, libraries, museums, antique shops, and movie theaters.

3. Ideating

Thinking inside the box hinders the design process. Lateral, unconventional thinking is crucial. Experienced designers often rely on formulas and intuition, but these approaches limit new possibilities.

4. Synthesizing

The ideation phase expands possibilities, while the synthesis phase narrows options and closes. Often, the most effective solutions are obvious, meeting initial criteria and superior to weaker ones.

5. Realizing

Client approval is essential for implementation. Designers and clients usually communicate regularly, preventing confusion and misunderstanding.

Fig 3.3 Tracking and Kerning

This book mentioned about kerning and tracking which is perfect for this task, since we need to do some kerning during this task.

Kerning is adjusting spacing between letters for optical consistency, while letterspacing adds space between letters. Tracking, crucial for readability, involves adjusting letter spacing.
